近代文藝小報。日報。光緒二十七年一月二十四日（1901年3月14日）創刊於上海。海上漱石生（孫玉聲）創辦並主持；光緒三十二年（1906）起先後由王楚芳、俠飛、夏月珊主持；宣統二年（1910）又由沈縵雲接編，並改該報為《民立報》之附刊。次年夏秋間，因登淫詞，被勒令停刊，歷時10年。

該報初為狹長條型6版。大體首冠1文，或時論，或散文，或詩詞；次為社會新聞、裏巷趣事；末附詩歌。1905年起增至8版。分設首篇、白話、笑林本旨、小說、寓言、文苑等16個欄目。另添附張1頁，專載滬浜見聞、公堂案牘。該報突出富有趣味性的新聞和幽默性的小品，兼刊政治、社會和科學論說文。如論說文《睡獅傳》、《論革命黨》、《愛國篇》等，針對時局，有感而發；諧雜文《預備立憲》、《三腳貓說》等，滑稽辛辣，譏刺時政；《哀中原賦》、《金陵懷古》詩等，借古喻今，抒情明志：都具有較積極的社會意義。其他較突出的文學作品，長篇小說有《密妃枕》、《牛諸犀》、《八大人》、《惡夢》、《莊子奇文》等；短篇小說有《老大病國》、《頑腐鏡》等：都從不同角度諷刺社會黑暗。該報還曾連續舉辦過“笑笑社燈虎詩鍾”活動，廣征燈謎聯語；組織過花榜選舉。其所設陽秋錄、粉墨叢談、翰墨林、談叢、談瀛錄等，均與文學有關，專載散文、筆記、隨筆、小品、文藝評論等。以單頁隨報附送的小說和彈詞前後有《海上繁華夢》、《仙俠五花劍》、《優孟衣冠》、《九仙枕》。並定期出版《詩文畫合報》。其撰稿人多不署名，署名者僅有文言、獨立、蕭山半癡、蘇堪、燃犀室主人、吳咸清、陶士鈞、蘭英女士等。（祝均宙）

The Grove of Laughter is not only one of the earliest, but also one of the most long-lasting small papers of the first period. As a daily, it was published for over 9 years, which is remarkable for this type of publication. Its charm may have been not only due to its promise of funny jokes, but also to its entertaining literary supplements, of which only three examples are extant in the store of the Shanghai Library (see images in the db).
